Fact check: Commentary on wealth is falsely labeled as Steve Jobs' last words

The claim: Steve Jobs' last words were a commentary on wealth

Steve Jobs’ last words were about his admiration of his family, not a critique of wealth, as a viral post claims.

A post that has been circulating in different forms since 2015 claims the Apple founder and billionaire died disillusioned with his wealth.

“In other eyes, my life is the essence of success, but aside from work, I have a little joy. And in the end, wealth is just a fact of life to which I am accustomed,” the post claims Jobs said.

“At this moment, lying on the bed, sick and remembering all my life, I realize that all my recognition and wealth that I have is meaningless in the face of imminent death,” it goes on to say. “You can hire someone to drive a car for you, make money for you — but you can not rent someone to carry the disease for you. One can find material things, but there is one thing that can not be found when it is lost — life.

“Your true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world. Whether you’re flying first class, or economy class — if the plane crashes, you crash with it.”

The post, made by Sergio Cardenas, then goes on to talk about the importance of seeking happiness, health and love in how you live your life over material possessions. The post has over 36,000 shares.

USA TODAY reached out to Cardenas for comment.

Fact check: Camping World CEO is misquoted in viral meme

What did Steve Jobs say on his death bed?

When Jobs died in 2011 from pancreatic cancer, his sister Mona Simpson spoke about his last words as part of her eulogy.

She said, “With that will, that work ethic, that strength, there was also sweet Steve’s capacity for wonderment, the artist’s belief in the ideal, the still more beautiful later.

Jobs’ final words, hours earlier, were monosyllables, repeated three times.

“Before embarking, he’d looked at his sister Patty, then for a long time at his children, then at his life’s partner, Laurene, and then over their shoulders past them,” she continued.

“Steve’s final words were: ‘Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.’”

UGC develops life skills programme, social media etiquettes, yoga part of the curriculum

The University Grants Commission has recently launched a life skills programme, ‘Jeevan Kaushal’ for under-graduate courses wherein etiquettes of social media, yoga, pranayam are a part of the syllabus.

In an attempt to develop the communication skills of the students, the new programme was launched, which also aims at inculcating emotional and intellectual competencies in students.

“Today when we talk about writing skills and communication skills, we cannot ignore writing on social media. The social media websites are a good medium to connect but students must know the advantages and disadvantages. There have to be some ethics and etiquettes of social media and the curriculum will teach them the same. There is also a module on how to use Google search better,” a senior UGC official said.

As per the professional world is concerned, writing a good resume is also a life skill which every student must learn. As the students are unable to differentiate between a curriculum vitae (CV), resume and a bio-data, this life skill will be of much importance before entering the worklife.

“What will learners gain if they practice love and compassion? What will they lose if they don’t? What are the listening skills one must practice as a team member and how different they should be as a team leader? All these skills the students should be trained in,” the official said.

Divided in three modules, the curriculum has integral human being, yoga and pranayama and gratitude as part of the curriculum. Integral human being embraces the obligation to self, parents and society besides a module on living with others with their acceptance, the module on gratitude is about duty versus rights. Similarly, yoga talks about the pranayam and yoga are interrelated.

Further talking about the developed curriculum, the official said, “The curriculum has been developed by an expert committee with an aim to support our graduates to unlock and discover their true potential and making them social responsive citizens.”

Curriculum for Life Skills (Jeevan Kaushal) designed by UGC launched

New Delhi, 11 Sept 2019:  Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shri Sanjay Dhotre, launched the Curriculum for Life Skills (JeevanKaushal) designed by University Grants Commission (UGC), in New Delhi today.

While speaking on the occasion, Shri Dhotre emphasized on development of life skills in every individual, as essential part of wholesome learning. He highlighted the problem of prevalent obsession with earning marks in different examinations. Such examination-driven education encourages narrow and selective reading and rote learning, which ultimately leads to deficit in actual learning. He added that in real life, one also needs to be skilled for coping with diverse situations that one may encounter in life. Highlighting the crucial importance of this new curriculum on life skills, he added that this initiative of UGC will surely lead to improvement in the collective efficiency of country’s young population.

In India, there is an unprecedented demand for quality higher education for producing employable, exceptionally performing graduates qualified with skills, knowledge and ethics essential for leading a rewarding life and it is with this aim University Grants Commission issued Quality Mandate and its objectives. Quality Mandate of UGC has been adopted in the National Conference of Vice – Chancellors and Directors on Research & Innovation held between 26th to 28th July, 2018 and Life Skills (JeevanKaushal) for students is one of its verticals.

UGC constituted Expert Committee prepared a Curriculum for Life Skills (JeevanKaushal) for Under Graduate Programme. The curriculum is designed to impart and strengthen the knowledge, skills and dispositions believed to be the best requisites of the current Industry and thereby empower the talent inherent in each learner. Life Skills like communication skill, interpersonal skill, time management, problem solving ability, decision making capacity, leadership ability and integrity play a crucial role in boosting the employability of the students.

Life skills (JeevanKaushal) curriculum cover the set of human talents acquired by an individual via classroom learning or life experience that can help them to deal with problems encountered in day to day life. This includes the core skills each individual must possess internally as well as externally for the betterment of self and the society as a whole. FOREWORD
Dear Reader Sir / Madam,

Greetings and Best Wishes! Welcome to blissful BLISS GITA! Thank You for your interest to know BLISS GITA. I will share my views with you freely. Please bless me…

Every year thousands of graduates come out of colleges but not all are employed. Job Givers say that they don’t have employability skills! Therefore, Skill Development of students and youth with entrepreneurial guidance is essential and need of the hour.

BHAGAVAD GITA emphasized Skill Development. It is said in 2nd chapter, 50th verse: “Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam” which means Dexterity in Actions is Yoga. Yoga means excellence in work. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and also Indian Administrative Service (IAS) adopted “Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam” as their Motto.

Let us glance at Challenges of the World to be resolved for Universal Peace: War, Drugs, Exploitation, Rapes, Human Trafficking, Child Abuse, Suicides, Poverty, Hunger, Malnutrition, Corruption, Adulteration, Terrorism, Disease fear, Virus-epidemic, CARONA Pandemic, Cruelty against Animals and many Challenges of the World are to be resolved for Universal Peace.

SriKrishna said in Bhagavad Gita Ch.4 – 7&8 that embodiment or incarnation of God takes place when DHARMA (Righteousness) is in danger. Along with God Protecting Dharma, let us also do our best and Practice Dharma as per the Vedic Dictum: Dharmo Rakshathi Rakshithaha – Protecting Dharma Protects! Dharma differentiates humans from other creatures. Dharma is eternal principle that alone upholds Universal Peace. Hence, establishing Dharma is the only solution for harmony and peace in the world.

In this context, the words of former President of India Dr. ABDUL KALAM in European Parliament are worth quoting: “Now what we need is a carrier of eternal goodness and wholesomeness in human conduct which is called Righteousness! As we say in India,

Where there is Righteousness in the Heart, there is Beauty in the Character; When there is Beauty in the Character, there is Harmony in the Home; When there is Harmony in the Home, there is Order in the Nation;
When there is Order in the Nation, there is Peace in the World”

Therefore incorporating Dharma (Righteousness) in Human Conduct is the only solution.

In this scenario, I also recollect the words of our Indian Philosopher and Statesman- the first Vice President and the second President of India Dr S. Radhakrishnan. (We celebrate his birthday as Teachers Day on 5th September as a mark of respect to him) He quoted that the true purpose or end product of education should be a free creative man who can battle against historical circumstances and adversities of Nature.

In the light of the above, I, K. V. Naga Raja Rao, dedicated & committed to the noble cause of Universal Peace, am enlightening and empowering students and youth and serve as an Enlighten Mentor / Counselor. I have great passion for Knowledge-Sharing. Bhagavad Gita begins with question and gives solution to all problems of life. BLISS GITA is innovated, exploring answers to questions of my students. Thus BLISS GITA evolved…

Philosophy
To Live and let live is the Philosophy of Life. India needs Quality People & Proactive Leaders. Moral Values are essential for fraternity and sovereignty of a Nation.
